Emerging Technologies in Asphalt Paving

May. 31 2021 News By Asphalt Care Equipment

Asphalt is now the material of choice for most commercial and residential development owners in the US. The National Asphalt Pavement Association reveals at least 90% of parking areas in the US are surfaced with asphalt pavement. The following emerging asphalt paving technologies are securing a foothold in successful high-quality paving projects:

Thermal Imaging

Thermal imaging leverages an infrared (IR) bar, which hangs on the back of the paver behind the screed. The bar monitors the pavement temperatures using infrared sensors. There could be a handful or several sensors depending on the paving width. The sensors provide real-time information on temperatures which can be used later for critical analysis.

Intelligent Compaction

First introduced in 2007, intelligent compaction has been used on over 1,000 projects each year. This technology provides crucial information and data needed to compact the mat optimally and minimize over-compaction issues. This not only reduces costs but also improves the durability of the pavement. The system, which is available as a factory-ordered unit, can be up-fitted to Hamm rollers if needed.

Automatic Grading Systems

Graders and compactors used to lack automatic grading settings for testing grades and slopes. Today, new machinery — such as motor graders — are equipped with automatic grade and slope controls to quickly and efficiently determine an established grading grid. This helps remove human errors from the grading process to ensure precise grade and drainage.
